Holiday Fire Preparedness With just a little extra attention, you can enjoy beautiful and safe decorations in your home this holiday season.

Holiday decorations are a significant part of the season. Trees, lights, and candles help create the holiday environments that are a part of some of our best memories. While all of the decorations are great ways to enjoy the holiday season, they can also be a cause for concern if the right precautions are not taken.

To protect your home in the midst of beautiful holiday decorations, The U.S. Fire Administration recommends paying close attention to the following 3 areas: trees, lights and candles.

Nothing replaces the scent of a real Christmas tree, but real Christmas trees require extra attention. Making sure your Christmas tree does not dry out is crucial for the safety of your home. Also, keeping the tree a safe distance from heat sources is important.

Lights are a beautiful way to decorate your home for the holidays. Making sure they are in working condition without fraying is important. Also, reading the manufacturer’s instructions can help make important decisions about when to connect another strand vs when to find another plug.

Finally, according to the U.S. Fire Administration, “More than half of the home decoration fires in December are started by candles.” Keeping candles a safe distance from flammable objects and remembering to extinguish them are important for the safety of your home.

With just a little extra attention, you can enjoy beautiful and safe decorations in your home this holiday season.
