Odor Removal Processes and Techniques

7/2/2024 (Permalink)

Working wiping down a wall to remove unwanted odors SERVPRO of Denton utilizes many processes and techniques to remove unpleasant odors from your home or business

When your home or business is affected by foul odors such as tobacco smoke, pet urine, or any other unpleasant smells, it can be frustrating and challenging to get rid of. At SERVPRO of Denton, our professional technicians are uniquely trained to identify the source and remove the smell. Here is an overview of  processes and techniques we utilize:

  • Once the source is identified and removed, technicians will use the science of deodorization in conjunction with a variety of products and procedures designed to remove odors including:
  • Masking Agents: these are agents such as air fresheners and are typically not used as the primary defense as they only cover up the odor. We may use them to provide a more pleasant odor while other deodorization methods are being performed.
  • Pairing Agents: these are chemical agents that combine or pair with odor particles. Pairing agents will be a highly absorptive material that combines with airborne odor particles and causes them to precipitate onto surfaces where they can be cleaned up; or counteractant, which combines chemically with an odor particle to change its odor-causing properties or destroy it. These agents may be wiped, sprayed, or fogged.
  • Filtration Agents: includes absorption and adsorption agents that are used to collect odors. Absorption agents are composed of highly absorptive compounds, inert fillers, and perfume. Adsorption agents work by capturing odor gasses from the air and holding them on the surface of the agent. These processes are used to filter odor gasses from air passing by or through the filtration agent.
  • Disinfectants and Sanitizers: used to control or kill odor-causing bacteria and fungi.
  • Enzyme Digesters: work effectively on organic or protein-based odors by using enzymes to break down organic molecules into substances without odor, such as carbon dioxide (CO2), water (H2O), and water-soluble by-products.
  • Air Purification: electronic filters use an electrically charged grid to kill airborne microorganisms as they pass through the filter.
  • Oxidation: oxidation occurs when a substance combines with oxygen. Ozone and hydroxyl generators may be used to produce ozone gas or hydroxyl radicals, which can permanently destroy odors.
  • Combination Techniques: deodorization usually requires a combination of techniques to be successful.
