Water Damage North Texas Water Damage from an Upstairs Water Leak

Water damage is very stressful, but the more you know, the better off you will be if it happens to you. Here are five things to know that can help a homeowner or business owner when water damage happens..

1. Flood damage and water damage may not both be covered by your insurance policy.

You may think that water is water, but the cause of the water can determine if your insurance company will cover the damage. Water damage from a busted pipe is more commonly covered while water from flooding may require additional coverage if not an additional policy.

2. Once water damage occurs, waiting to get help could increase the damage.

Time is critical when your property is damaged by water. Not acting quickly enough can lead to secondary damage caused by mold growth. Mold spores are everywhere, but they need a source of moisture and nutrients to grow. This is exactly what your wet carpet or drywall provides, so not addressing the water damage quickly can escalate the problem. .

3. The type of water matters.

Damage caused by water is classified as one of three levels according to the level of contamination of the water source.

Category 1: Water from clean water sources, such as fresh water lines for dishwashers. This water does not cause disease or adverse effects.

Category 2: Water that may have bacteria in it and can cause illness.

Category 3: Highly contaminated water. Exposure can lead to serious illness or death. Think of a backup of sewage, an overflowing toilet, or storm water.
