Aerial view of a hurricane from space The 2020 Hurricane Season begins June 1 and runs through November 30.

June 1 marks the start of the 2020 Hurricane season. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicts a higher than normal hurricane season by 60 percent and predicting 13-19 named storms.

Here are some tips on how to prepare for a hurricane or tropical storm:

  • First, you must determine your risk. Do you live in a coastal area and may have storm surges? Or if you live inland will you be more affected by tornadoes and flooding?
  • After determining your risk, make an action plan.
  • Update and check any supplies you have. It is recommended to have enough food and water for 3 days, as well as, medicines, batteries and more. For a full list visit the NOAA website.
  • Look over and possibly revise your insurance coverage.
